SLAUGHTERHOUSE HALBE**
German Attack - Soviet Defense*
Halbe, Germany, 1800 hrs April 28, 1945*
Turns 20*

MADE FOR ENHANCED FR**

SCENARIO NOTES:**
After two unsuccesfull tries, on the night of April 28 the Germans tried another mass breakout from around Halbe. They managed to break through the 50th Guards Rifle Division and created a corridor from Halbe to the west but they paid a very high price. During the 28th and 29th the Soviets reinforced the flanks and attacked from the south poring in Katyusha rockets and shells concentrating on the area around the Halbe.*
By this time the Germans were spread over a wide area. The rearguard was at Storkow and the vanguard had linked up with the 12th Army at Beelitz. There were large groups around Halbe. The Soviet battle plan was to split the caterpillar into segments and then destroy each segment individually. The German battle plan was to continue moving west as fast as possible keeping the corridor open.*
The situation in Halbe was desperate for the Germans, orders were still being issued to recognisable formations, but these were by now all mixed up. There was considerable tension between Waffen-SS and Wehrmacht soldiers with both accusing the other of helping their own comrades while ignoring the plight of the other. In Halbe itself some of the civilians took pity on very young solders "kindersoldaten" and allowed them to change out of their uniforms into civilian clothes.*
In one documented case an SS man appeared at the door of a cellar intending to shoot a Panzerfaust into a cellar with about 40 civilians and young Wehrmacht soldiers in it, only to be shot dead by one of the soldiers.*
During the following days, the fighting became more and more confused. If the Germans came into contact with Soviet forces and overran a Soviet position, the Soviets counter-attacked not only with ground forces but with artillery and aircraft. Losses on both sides were very high. By the time the fighting was over, (around the end of April, begining of May), about 25,000 German soldiers had managed to escape to join up with the 12th Army on the eastern side of Reichstrasse 2 the road running north south through Beelitz.*
Although this was the end of the battle it was not the end of the breakout. The 12th and 9th Armies remnants then fought a fighting retreat westwards towards the Elbe so that they could surrender to the Americans.**

PLAYER NOTES:**
Your mission is to break through the Soviet defense line In Halbe. You have to open a corridor to the west. It is our last chance to escape the Russian steamroller!**

HISTORICAL NOTES*
After the German bombardment on Rotterdam on May 14, Dutch forces in The Netherlands surrendered. In the days preceding this date, the Dutch asked for help by French forces. Their wish was granted. This meant, however, that Dutch forces in parts of the Netherlands, where they worked together with the French expeditionary force were not allowed to surrender. The only place in the Netherlands where this happened was the Dutch province of Zeeland. Here the fighting lasted until May 17, 1940.**

As can be imagined, the Dutch morale was not very high. Lots of Dutch forces surrendered therefore without their officers consent. The French forces in Zeeland felt abandoned by the Dutch.**

On May 17, at around 0300 hours, two German artillery sections opened fire on the west side of the Sloedam. Half an hour later the 9thKompanie of the III Battalion of the SS Standarte Deutschland attacked the French forces. The French resisted heavily and withstood the German onslaught.**

After this mishap, The Germans tried to drown the resistance by the use of heavy artillery fire and the use of heavy Luftwaffe bombardments on Arnemuiden, Vlissingen and Middelburg.**

These bombardments had a demoralizing effect on the French soldiers, who defended the Sloedam, even though General de Brigade Deslaurens visted the frontline more than once to urge his soldiers on. Most of his defences on the Sloedam were shattered and his forces pulled back.**

The SS Standarte Deutschland therefore had the opportunity to seize the Dutch island ofWalcheren without having to cope with too much resistance. They reached the outskirts of Vlissingen at around 2000 hours. General de Brigade Deslaurens and his troops fought a bitter battle to keep the German forces from reaching the harbour too early. Their last link to survival consiting of a small fleet of fisherboats and French marine craft were waiting in Vlissingen harbour to evacuate the men to France. Deslaurens fought literally until the bitter end. In the evening of May 17 he took a deadly hit from a German bullet. At 2300 hours Vlissingen surrendered.**

PLAYER NOTES*
You have to hold the German Onslaught at the least until your two marine vessels - at the left side of the map - are in Vlissingen harbour.**

Mon capitain, make sure these vessels stay in DEEP water; if they are grounded, General Deslaurens will not be able to pull your forces out of les Pays Bas.**

Mon General, you have to hold Vlissingen harbour until your flotilla arrives. it will consist of two vessels. At this time, your forces are all over the place. Coordinate the defense of the town and pull your men back to the harbour!**

DESIGNER NOTES*
You have to bring your two vessels into the harbour using only the deep water hexes. So watch carefully for colour changes in the water. Hovering your mouse over a hex before moving your vessel into it will help too!**

And another one! This one's an update of the first one I ever published. Have FUN!

______Historical Background:**

Dutch province of Limburg. May 10th. 1940. 0400**

In the early morning hours of 10 May 1940 German forces moved into the Dutch province of Limburg trying to get around the Belgian defenses at Eben Emael. A fast capture of the bridges over the Meuse (or Maas as it is called in Dutch) was of the utmost importance. As it was,the Netherlands were frantically trying to uphold their neutrality. However. the biggest part of their forces was concentrated on the 'Grebbelinie' in central Holland.**

Therefore, Dutch forces along the Maas were spread very thin: a mere few companies, supplemented with a few AT-cannons and a few heavy mg's, were spread along the Maas and the
Julianacanal over a 100 km stretch from north to south, and had to delay an attacking force consisting of three reinforced infantry divisions. **

To paint a clear picture of the tactical situation: in the Dutch province of Limburg, the river Maas and the Julianacanal stream alongside each other from north to south for about a 100 km's (about 60 miles). To access the bridges over the Maas, and consequently the Belgian 'hinterland', the German forces had to get their hands on the bridges over the Julianacanal.**

This scenario focusses on the section of the two streams in the vicinity of a small Dutch village named Born. In Born there is a lockage. Dutch troops had orders to defend the lockage for as long as they possibly could, but not to destroy it or let the Germans destroy it. Dutch forces consisted of a few ‘Infanterie Secties’, led by 1st Luitenant H. Ekkering. In reality he held the German onslaught for about 5 hours before he gave up and tried to bring his remaining men to safety. To achieve this goal, he had to get to the Maas crossing in Grevenbicht.**

Your task is twofold:*
First you have to defend the Born Lockage for as long as is humanly possible without having the lockage destroyed.**

Second you have to be a responsible commander and try to bring as many men as you possibly can to the Maas crossing in Grevenbicht (Just follow the road to the left hand side of the map).**
Go for it 1st Luitenant Ekkering!**

PLAYER’S NOTES:**
The best you can achieve in this scenario is probably a draw. In reality Ekkering lost four men. When the situation deteriorated too much he sent most of his men on their way to Grevenbicht and defended the lockage with a few volunteers until he was sure the majority of his men were save. Then he gave up and was captured by the Germans. **

For pulling back to Grevenbicht, later on in the game an exit hex will be visible on the end of the dirt road leading to the west. **

In the early hours of May 10th, 1940, German forces on the western frontiers were committed to Fall Gelb, the plan to conquer Western Europe.**

German forces simultaneously attacked the Dutch and the Belgian borders. Just before the crossing of the borders, the Germans bombed strategically important sites. Some of these sites were deemed so important, that they had to be attacked and taken before the main attack took place**

One of the sites to be taken before the main force reached them was the Ypenburg Airport between Delft and the residence of the Dutch government, The Hague.**

Ypenburg was defended by a battallion of the Genadiers Regiment, about a thousand men. Besides these men, the airport was defended by heavy machineguns, four platoons of AA-HMG s and two batterys of AA-Guns.**

At about 0400 on May 10th 1940, an aerial bombardment started. Lots of Dutch defenders panicked and fled in these first moments of the war. This attack was followed Fallschirmjaeger landings.**

The remaining defenders put up a heroic fight which lasted until about 0715 when a Fallschirmjaegerplatoon took about 40 fleeing Dutch soldiers prisoner on the road to Delft and marched - using them as a human shield - to the main airport command post. The Grenadier Battallion s commander Reserve Majoor E.C.F. ten Haaf decided at that moment to surrender the airport to the Germans.**

Player s Notes:*
Herr Major, take this Dutch airport within 10 turns to ensure the Dutch won't be able to raise any aerial defense!! Defense should be light, considering the Dutch neutrality; they are in for a BIG surprise!!!**

____HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:**
In April 1945 the Second World War was all but over in Western Europe. American forces rushed forward through the southern parts of the Reich.**

The American Forces motivation was at this time - to say the least - less than optimal. And understandably so. No one wanted to run the risk of getting wounded or worse during this last phase of the war.**

There were however still pockets of resistance. Mostly consisting of SS-troops and Volkssturm troops.**

On 8 April 1945, a Mechanised Infantry Company, reinforced by four Sherman tanks and two 105mm SP-Guns are racing through the Bavarian countryside on their way to Berchtesgaden. Ahead lies a peaceful little village. After crossing the bridge the road to Berchtesgaden lies wide open.**

____Scenario Notes:**
Colonel, you have to pull through this village as soon as possible! If you should encounter enemy resistance, neutralize it and see that you reach Berchtesgaden before 1700 hours.**

SCENARIO NOTES*
Following their destruction of Army Group Centre in the summer of 1944, the Red Army launched a massive offensive across the Ukraine and into Eastern Poland against Army Group North Ukraine.*
It culminated in the seizure of bridgeheads on the western bank of the
Vistula River, notably in the region of Sandomierz. Despite their losses, the German forces were still full of fight and threw whatever units they could muster against the Soviet enclaves.*
One of these units was 501st Heavy Tank Battalion, newly equipped with Tiger IIs and under the command of Major von Legat. In common with most of the German heavy tank units in the latter part of the war, the 501st was fated to become a ‘fire brigade’ force, transferred from place to place as the situation demanded and denied the time to build up an
operational relationship with the units it supported.**

However, its baptism of fire as a Tiger II unit was yet to come, as, on 6th August, all serviceable vehicles were loaded onto flat cars and shipped to Poland, leaving behind 14 of these brand new, but temperamental monsters in the battalion workshops.*
In the vicinity of Staszow, at the southwestern extremity of the
Sandomierz bridgehead, the Soviet 6th Guards Tank Corps was in the van of the Russian advance; the village of Ogledow its latest conquest. However, resistance had hardened and reconnaissance led Corps HQ to order its tank units to pull back and establish defensive positions west of Staszow.*
The 53rd and 52nd Tank Brigades were in the likely path of a German attack and attempted to dig their surviving T-34s into the soft, sandy soil, or camouflage them amongst haystacks.*
Facing the Russians was 16th Panzer Division, which launched
probing attacks across the sandy fields but achieved little success. Although their numbers were depleted and about half their T-34s were only armed with the 76.2mm gun, 6th Tank Corps was effectively supported by assault guns and artillery and the Germans soon realized that something more substantial would be needed to pierce the Soviet lines.**

Around August 11th /13th (sources vary on the exact date) the tank crews of 53rd Tank Brigade heard the rumble of powerful tank engines through the mist that masked the valley in front of their positions. As the vehicles lumbered into view, their tracks struggling to find a grip on the loose surface, the T-34 commanders identified them as enemy Panthers.*
Waiting until they were at extremely close range, camouflaged Soviet tanks unleashed flanking fire from ambush positions, followed by AP shot from the rest of the brigade’s armour and their supporting assault guns. *
At least two of the tanks are claimed to have been stopped by close range fire from Lt A.P. Oskin’s T-34 using special APDS shot, but it was only on
closer examination that the Russians realised these were not Panthers, but a previously unseen type of heavy tank.**

Prisoners captured prior to the action had revealed the arrival of a new heavy tank battalion, but the Russians appear to have had no idea that it was equipped with the Tiger Is replacement. In fact 501st Heavy Tank Battalion had only been able to muster 11 serviceable vehicles for this attack, due to the mechanical problems that dogged most of the late war German ‘super weapons’, which tended to be rushed into service without sufficient field trials.**

With this assault beaten back the Soviet forces launched a counter attack, surprising the German forces and recapturing Ogledow. Amongst the spoils were three Tiger IIs, allegedly still in running order and abandoned by their crews. It is likely that these had suffered minor
malfunctions and, as no other vehicle was capable of towing them, couldn’t be moved in time.**

Other clashes followed, which, according to Soviet sources, resulted in the loss of more Tigers to the guns of Soviet tanks, including the IS-IIs of the 71st Independent Guards Heavy Tank Battalion. Whatever the full truth, the German heavies had been poory deployed in ill-judged frontal attacks and after the action Major von Legat was replaced as the unit commander.**

SCENARIO NOTES*
If played as Germany: Major von Legat, you have to retake Ogledow and advance as far as possible to the east.*
If played as the USSR: Comrade Oskin, you have to defend Ogledow and the surrounding hights. Be alert on German tries to cross the Vistula again!**

DESIGNER NOTES:*
This scenario has been redesigned especially for the ENHANCED FR Mod.**
